Free canine science event, June 1-3: Live streaming world wide! #SPARCS18

Free canine science event, June 1-3: Live streaming world wide! #SPARCS18

It’s Baaack!

You may remember us talking about the SPARCS conference in 2013, 2014, and 2015. After a 2-year hiatus, it’s baaack! And people who care about dogs all around the world are pretty much losing it with excitement (like on the SPARCS Facebook page!).

SPARCS, which stands for the Society for the Promotion of Applied Research in Canine Science, has been at the forefront of connecting dog lovers to canine science via a free, live streaming conference that actively brings dog people into the conversation #SPARCS18!

SPARCS returns for 2018, this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 1 - 3. This time, it’s all about what’s underneath: canine behavioral genetics. Six canine researchers, behavioral veterinarians, and geneticists bring us ‘The Real Dog: What We Know & What We Don’t (Yet).’

#SPARCS18 speakers and science hosts!
We’re incredibly excited to join SPARCS for the third year as science hosts. The conferences is live streaming from New York's Hudson Valley (EDT), and is now presented by The National Canine Research Council. As we prepare for the conference, here’s what you should know about watching and engaging live, and even how to watch later.

June 1 - 3, 2018
9:30am - 5:15pm (EDT)
Each day features two speakers, post-talk Q&A, and an end-of-day group panel discussion 4:30pm - 5:15pm

Friday, June 1
Ádám Miklósi and Kristopher Irizarry kick us off with the evolution of dogs’ close relationship with humans.

Saturday, June 2
Claire Wade and Elinor Karlsson introduce the amazingly complex relationship between genomics and behavior, which in recent years has been clarified with the help of citizen science.

Sunday, June 3
Kelly Ballantyne and Jessica Hekman wrap it up and get really real about the impact of behavioral genetics on dog relationships with humans and the important recognition that genetics don’t necessarily mean predestination.

Get social: Pose questions and comments for speaker Q&As and daily panel discussions. This live streaming conference is anything but passive — unless that’s what you want, in which case sit back in your pajamas and relax! After each talk, we (Mia and Julie of Do You Believe in Dog?) will hold speaker Q&A sessions, and our questions (we hope!) will be your questions!

Share questions or comments over Twitter DYBID using #SPARCS18, and feel free to post on the Do You Believe in Dog Facebook page too. Remember, SPARCS is also on Facebook and Twitter

Watch later: All presentations and panel discussions will be recorded and posted to the SPARCS website following the conference.

Watch the past: As mentioned, this is the 4th SPARCS conference, and past presentations, speaker interviews, and panel discussions are available, right now, for free, on the SPARCS website. Hear from Marc Bekoff, Michael Fox, Clive Wynne, Ádám Miklósi, Ray Coppinger, James Serpell, Simon Gadbois, Monique Udell, Alexandra Horowitz, Kathryn Lord, Patricia McConnell, Stephen Zawistowski, Michael Hennessey, Bonne Beerda, James Ha, Hal Herzog, Márta Gácsi and others anytime you like.

Hi World!

It's not often that anyone, anywhere in the world can just join a conference for free. Comic Con is not even that cool. But that's just how dogs roll!

SPARCS, the canine science conference we've been talking about for months, is taking place now, June 20-22, and you can watch the live broadcast for FREE just by going to.

The conference begins at 8:30 AM Eastern Time on Friday, June 20th, and speaker talk times and titles are listed here. Stay with us until 7:00 PM Easter Time on Sunday, June 22.

Last year, over 20,000 people joined the first SPARCS conference from around the world. This year, we're expecting to top those numbers! Our conference reminder post was shared 248 times and reached over 14,000 people in less than 24 hours.

Do You Believe in Dog? is hosting this year's SPARCS conference, June 20-22, featuring daily themes of Aggression & Conflict, Personality & Temperament and finally Science in Training. Hear from some of the best minds in canine science from the comforts of your own home whether that be the bathroom, couch, kitchen table, we don't care. Your choice.

In preparing for the conference, we discovered that not everyone realized that you can access the conference in real time for free.

Through the 3-day event, follow the presentations, and join in using #SPARCS2014. You can share your comments and questions on Twitter using: #SPARCS2014 Q

Why Does My Dog Do THAT??

Why Does My Dog Do THAT??

DYBID? gets to know a #NYC dog
Hi Mia,

Everything is different.

For the past two years I have been writing to you as you play out life in Australia -- “in the future” as I like to say. Others might call it a different time zone. To each their own. Now we’re sitting across from one another in my apartment working on our respective laptops as we prepare for #SPARCS2014.

Your arrival to #NYC has been such a breath of fresh air! Not only do we get to talk about our beloved topics of dog welfare, behavior, cognition, learning, training and everything-under-the sun-dog, but we get to do it while preparing to host an international TED-style canine science conference that anyone in the world can watch from their home!

One of the the things I enjoy so much about dog behavior research in general -- and Do You Believe in Dog? specifically -- is the feeling of community. There is a general perspective that researchers wear white lab coats and hole up in university laboratories muttering to themselves as they putter around with experiments until all hours of the night. While we might mutter to ourselves and putter around, the field of canine science very much has collaborative and collective elements. Researchers regularly meet to discuss methods, approaches and findings, and in recent years, scientists also share their findings with an increasingly interested audience. Science communication has become paramount in the field of canine research, and it would be pretty weird if dog science were all kept hush hush in academic research papers given its application.

For anyone who has ever wondered, “Why Does My Dog Do THAT (fill in the blank with whatever your version of ‘that’ is)," #SPARCS2014, a Free, Live Streaming canine science conference June 20-22, 2014 is for you.

Since the inception of this blog, just under 2 years ago, we’ve had over 151,000 visitors. We look forward to seeing many of you virtually at #SPARCS2014!
As we countdown to #SPARCS2014, here’s a sample of our preparations (with a side of playing with papier mâché dogs and greeting dogs).

Every dog deserves play!

We Work!

Cats are invited, too

Night!

SPARCS: Igniting interest in canine science

SPARCS: Igniting interest in canine science

We are thrilled to announce that the Do You Believe in Dog? duo, Julie and Mia, will be attending the Society for the Promotion of Applied Research in Canine Science 2014 Conference #SPARCS2014 in the exciting new role of hosts of the live broadcast.

This year's line up looks amazing! Presentations from leading canine scientists -- based around the themes of "Aggression" and Conflict; Temperament and Personality and Applying Science in Training -- will take place over the three days:

Ray Coppinger
Simon Gadbois
Sam Gosling
Kathryn Lord
Patricia McConnell
James K. Russell
James Serpell
Monique Udell
Clive Wynne

In our role as commentators, we will be on site at the Jane Pickens Theatre in Newport, interviewing speakers, and providing real-time analysis on the topics raised. Most importantly, we'll connect with the thousands of people tuning in from around the globe. Listeners at home will enjoy a more active role in #SPARCS2014.

How can you get involved?

If you'd like to join us in Rhode Island, there are a few ways to get there:

  1. Join SPARCS: GOLD membership gets you a free ticket to the conference and unlimited access to the recordings of the broadcasts for one year. SILVER membership gets you a 10% discount on tickets for the conference and unlimited access to the recordings of the broadcasts for one year.
  2. Attend the conference: You can buy tickets directly through the SPARCS website here
  3. Tune in to the FREE live stream of the conference from ANYWHERE in the world: You can sign up to be notified when the live stream is active herehttp://caninescience.info/live-stream/
  4. Follow the conference on social media: We'll be making sure people can follow the action on Twitter (follow #SPARCS2014)
Watching SPARCS2013 couch-side with friends on opposite sides of the globe!
We did this last year and it was AWESOME! Obviously not as wonderful as being there in person, but it is an amazing way to access these great scientists when geography tries to get in the way of a good time! So if you're in Denmark, Uruguay, Namibia, Antarctica, Brazil, the Phillipines, or anywhere in between, don't feel like you can't be part of #SPARCS2014, because you can!

More to come as the event approaches...
